Inside Sales Advice: When to Quit

Inside Sales Advice on When “Quitting” is “Winning”

It’s Not Me. It’s You.

“I was raised to never “quit” anything. That upbringing has served me well, however, I haven’t been happy at work in a long time. I feel like throwing in the towel, but would rather leave on a high note and I just can’t seem to hit the sales numbers I used to. Any advice?”

Ah, this is a topic near and dear to my heart. I can’t speak for you and your specific situation without learning a little more but what I can offer is how knowing when to “quit” led me to my largest sales commission check ever.

There’s a chance my story might help you do the same. So here it goes…

Like you, “quitting” is just something I don’t do. So when I was working for an organization that made me feel sick to my stomach every day as I drove into work, the problem was compounded by not wanting to leave as a “failure.”

Add in the fact that my wife and I just bought our first home and had a little mouth to feed, leaving your comfort zone, even when staying in it makes you physically and mentally ill, just seemed too risky (and scary as hell)

The problem was, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get my sales mojo back.

Did I “forget” how to sell? No.

Was all my past sales success just “luck”? No.

So what was the problem?

It’s Not Me. It’s You.

The problem was simple in my situation, even if it took me a while to recognize it.

I lost faith in what I was selling and who I was selling for.

And when you no longer believe in what it is that you are selling, it is time to close this chapter and open the next one.

But Change is Scary

The day I had enough and walked out, I literally had panic attacks. How was I going to tell my wife? How was I going to pay our bills? How was I going to put food on the table?

My first advice to you is to take action before you reach the “breaking point” – recognize the problem and, if for whatever reason, it is insolvable, start the processes of finding your next place of work (while still doing your best for your current employer)
If, like me, you waited too long or realized too late that the party’s over but are still too scared to “move,” – I have an EXCELLENT book for you to read.

In fact, I would recommend everyone read this book (and listen to it on audio as well)

It was a GAME CHANGER for me (and I don’t use those words lightly)

It’s called “WHO MOVED MY CHEESE” by Spencer Johnson.

Let me tell you – This book, in no time flat, helped me see that change is not to be feared but encouraged. It helped me turn my fear into fuel and analyze the problem for what it was and attack it rather than be controlled by it.

Not only did I get another, better job in no time, but with my newfound thirst for growth and change, “quitting” that one job led me on a path to the next chapters that ultimately had me start my first company, which I then sold for $1.2 million dollars in a cash deal. My largest commission check ever.

That would never have happened if I had never “quit” a bad situation.
